kelley stoltz, now a veritable godfather to the burgeoning san francisco under/over-ground (folks like thee oh sees, sonny & the sunsets, the fresh & onlys), has blazed a path since the late 90s as a home-recording guru and multi-instrumentalist. and, while stoltzs nigh-religious reverence for all things beatles, beach boys and kinks has been at the fore on recent albums below the branches, sub pop) and circular sounds, sub pop), his new album, to dreamers, blends a bit more post-punk abandon into its layered everyman pop. this new album maintains the kaleidoscopic core of sounds heard on kelleys previous records, while making inroads into new sonic terrains.

released on the always reliable hit farm neon gold, which has given the world marina & the diamonds, ellie goulding, your twenties and penguin prison among others, starsmith is a super-hip young producer who has worked with ellie on her album, as well as remixing marina, passion pit, nerd and loads of others. its a scorching electro-tinged pop demon, glam without the cheese, and reminiscent of the kind of smashes that the french house lords of the mid 90s (like fred falke and alan braxe - more on him later...) were ruling dance music with. great sample from an old ritchie family (clip below...) disco stomper from the 80s which powers the whole thing with a undeniable hands-in-the-air vibe. a big autumn hit!

italians do it better owner/traveling dj salesman/heavy record collector mike simonetti takes an edit to three very obscure 90s house tracks. we were able to recognize the a-side with some help. the track was altered significantly and intro extends and builds and builds and builds... the two tracks on the b-side sound like 90s japanese piano house and a happy house rave track flipped on 33 but to be honest, we have no idea what they are.

double a side release from a london based unknown artist on this dark dubstep label inspired by early 90s sampling culture. first tune up is a dark and heavy stepper with sinister vocals drenched in echo. mutated basslines sit nicely under face slap snares. flip side is a nice roller that never lets up, a chunky bassline plays off the relentless beats while paranoia samples bring on the thc induced psychosis.

mowars 7th release is an all-belgian production. belgian producer ozka, who released on aesthetik records back in 2006 and was part of the 6th sense collective during the mid 90s with releases on dave angels rotation, is back in the studio churning out tracks. his hidden roots ep on mowar shows his love for basic mental grooves with clear detroit and uk techno influences.

it is incredible and a little unnerving to discover that rio padices first forays in production came as recently as 2007. 2008 saw him publish his first productions on mosaik musik, which were of a more minimal, techno nature. 2009 saw the successful collaboration with metroline limited, which has spawned a a number of releases and remixes, most notably his road to alberqueque and twin peaks eps. the same year also saw rio join forces with massimo di lena under their new alias >horacio< to release two ep s on the highly acclaimed raum musik and cynosure labels.with rio currently devoting his time to learning the production techniques of the 90s, blending the use of software, hardware and sampling, his productions, unlike so much of the current trend for looking back, have a mature and studied classic sound and feel to them

massive cool acid banger! hot reverse spining wax

here we have a double a-side 12-inch, with an intriguing new development of the secondo sound. still banging, still aimed at the club but with a sense of maturity and laid-backness, that the previous secondo material for dreck records might not have been centred around. the whole outlook has become more house orientated and we are very excited about this new mixture of the secondo splice-funk with the steadiness of early 90s house generating its own idiosyncratic sound. on the a-side, i think im gonna likeestablishes the housey mood of the 12straight off. a brief vocal sample is dotted over a relaxed rhythm until a break mid-track introduces the second half to its full extent and bloom. ædoktor panglosson the b-side continues with the mid-tempo flavour set out by the aside and is defined by a steady build up towards a disco sample beautifully placed towards the end of the track, where a heavy bass line cuts short the euphoria of disco strings. the sampling and references in both tracks have been pushed to the background and mentioning any of them would not do this exciting new material any justice. its all fresh!

akin to deconstruction itself, >the gift< symbolised the credible mid 90s dance hit. surrounded by a fog of cheap commercial fodder, way out wests roberta flack-sampling crossover anthem shone like a beacon, reaching the top 15 of the uk singles chart in 1996.
kicking off the new package is way out wests own 2010 remix. toughening up the original break based drums and adding a few new synth lines is all wow needed to do to breath a second life in their ubiquitous track.
gui borattos remix takes the track into deep tech house territory. gui flips the track to a straight 4/4 beat, adding some organic percussion, side chained chords and his trademark warm distorted synths to create a truly euphoric groove.
